Doing Business with China

Ralph Huenemann
Professor Emeritus, University of Victoria

Delivered at University of Economics, Prague
January 2010

These lectures will help students understand China’s business relationships (both trade and investment) with the rest of the world. We will begin by exploring briefly China’s geographical, cultural and historical context. We will then examine the Chinese economy in some detail, with primary focus on the transition from a heavily agricultural, largely self-reliant, and centrally-planned economy to an industrial, open and largely market-driven economy, which has resulted from the reforms that began in 1978. Finally, we will discuss in considerable detail the current business climate in China, both its opportunities and its difficulties.

The course objectives are to:
• Understand the implications of China’s economic reforms of the last three decades, which have entailed a dramatic shift from a centrally-planned economy of the Soviet model to a mixed economy with significant market elements but substantial government guidance as well;
• Understand China’s policy dilemmas and the current climate for international business dealings; and
• Develop the capacity to analyze policy choices and predict policy outcomes, to identify business opportunities, and to evaluate strategic business decisions.
